PhD position in Data and Software Engineering for Machine Learning Systems

PhD position in Data and Software Engineering for Machine Learning Systems at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya BARCELONATECH (UPC).

Then you should consider getting in touch with us!
We are the research group inSSIDE.
The position is for 3 years, and could be extended for another one.

Area:

Intersection of Data Engineering (DE) and sustainable Software Engineering (SE) for Machine Learning (ML) systems.

Topic:

Data preparation pipelines for ensuring quality attributes of ML systems (e.g., relevance and energy efficiency).

Project:

“Development, operation and data governance for ML-based software systems (DOGO4ML)”

Tasks:

  • Conduct a state-of-the-art on efficient data preparation processes for ML systems.
  • Creation of a catalogue of quality requirements for the efficient data preparation process for ML systems.
  • Definition of a knowledge graph for context-aware data pipelines for (a type of) ML systems. The knowledge graph is key for the smart data selection/harvesting/preparation, reducing the need to collect, store, process and transfer unnecessary large amounts of data.
  • Design, generation and evaluation of efficient data preparation pipelines for high-quality, representative, unbiased, and compliant training data for ML systems.
  • Development of a proof of concept for the generation of smart data selection and preparation pipelines and their deployment into ML systems (including continuous feedback loop from operation).

Requirements:

  • B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering or similar.
  • Interest on data engineering, software engineering, machine learning, green AI.
  • Passionate about research on data and software engineering for ML systems.

How to apply:

  • Application deadline: October 10th, 2022.
  • Contact person: Silverio Martínez-Fernández (silverio.martinez@upc.edu), Besim Bilalli (bbilalli@essi.upc.edu).
  • The application, sent to the two above e-mails, shall include:
    • Mandatory documents:
      • Cover letter (stating your interest, your possibilities in the PhD program, and anything you consider relevant to know for the Selection Committee)
      • Passport
      • CV
      • Bachelor certificate
      • Master certificate
      • Official transcripts
      • Proof of English proficiency
